What we know

Here’s what the government has announced.

National program

A new National Heat Pump Rebate to help eligible Canadian homeowners install qualifying electric heat pumps, backed by $2 billion over eight years.

Eligible equipment

Electric cold-climate air-source heat pumps on an official Eligible Products List, which the government says will include over 100,000 options.

No energy audits

No energy audit is required before or after installation.

Online application

A streamlined online portal, with a short form asking for basic personal information and details of the heat pump.

Faster approvals

The government says approval will be confirmed within 24 hours, and payment approved within five days of submitting receipts.

Provincial rebates

The government has said the rebate can be combined with existing provincial programs, subject to each program’s requirements.

One rebate per person

Only one rebate will be issued per person.

Opening and retroactivity

Applications open in early 2027. The government says eligible households that install eligible heat pumps from November 1, 2026 will be able to apply once it opens.

These are announced program features. The final rules and application instructions decide eligibility. The government says full details will be available as of November 1, 2026.

Why a heat pump

One system. Heating and cooling comfort.

01

Year-round comfort

Heat pumps can provide both heating and air conditioning.

02

Energy efficiency

They move heat rather than making all of it with electric resistance.

03

Cold-climate options

Certain heat pumps are designed to work in Canadian winters.

04

Flexible configurations

Depending on the home: ducted, ductless, or a properly designed hybrid setup.

Savings vary from home to home. Explore central heat pumps or ductless heat pumps.

Is your home a good candidate?

Could a heat pump work for your home?

Whether a heat pump suits your home and whether you qualify for a rebate are two different questions. A home can be a great fit without qualifying for a particular rebate.

Current heating fuel

What you heat with today affects running costs and options.

Existing ductwork

Ducts suit a central system; homes without them suit ductless.

Home size and layout

How heat needs to reach each room.

Insulation and air sealing

A tighter home needs a smaller system.

Local climate

Colder regions need cold-climate equipment and suitable backup.

Electrical capacity

Your panel needs room for the heat pump and any backup heat.

Heating and cooling needs

Whole home, part of it, or cooling too.

Existing equipment

The age and condition of what you have now.

Proper sizing

Based on a load calculation, not square footage.

Eligibility checker: coming when official rules are available

Once the federal rules are published, our rebate checker will be updated to show whether you may be eligible, based only on the published criteria. It will never say “approved”; only the official program can approve a rebate.
